The act of giving a gift doesn’t have to be sheer torture. Too often people put pressure on finding “the perfect present” for a friend, loved one or family member. Remember, this is supposed to be fun. Your goal is to put a smile on someone else’s face, not cause yourself additional stress.

- Think about what the recipient wants, not what you think they should want. Everyone has different styles and tastes in clothing, home décor, food, movies, books…you get the picture. It’s easy to get someone something that you’d want for yourself just because you love it. When you’re shopping for a gift for someone else, try to avoid doing that. Think about what they want and what their tastes and interests are. You may have to buy that hideous floral scarf, but if it’s something you know Mom would love for Mother’s Day, suck it up and spend the dough.
- If you’re going to re-gift, be very careful. We’ve all been in situations where we want to unload a gift that we weren’t thrilled to get or found that we didn’t use. Re-gifting can be tricky because unless you remember exactly who gave it to you and whether or not the person you want to give the gift to was there when you received it, you run the risk of them remembering and knowing that it was a re-gift. You should also ONLY re-gift something if it’s in its original packaging and has never been used.
- Make it personalized. For certain occasions, you’re going to want the gift you give to be special. In order to do that, you have to personalize whatever you’re giving to them. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to buy an engraved gift or monogrammed gift. Those are great personalized gift ideas, but that’s not the only way you can make a gift special. You can make your gift yourself, get something custom made or plan something special for the two of you to do together. As long as your gift is something they will enjoy, you’ll be satisfied with the choice that you made.
